Aptos, Rio Del Mar, and Seacliff are located in the middle of Santa Cruz County between the two largest cities, Santa Cruz and Watsonville. All are considered “Aptos” by the post office, but are different communities with a wealth of beauty and history. All are still unincorporated, Aptos generally being defined as east of Highway 1, leading into the foothills. Rio Del Mar on the other side of the freeway, ending at the ocean. Seacliff is generally considered to be the area surrounding State Park Drive from the freeway to the ocean, Aptos Creek, and approximately Park Drive to the north, in Capitola.

Aptos, which is inland, has warmer temperatures as they are usually out of the fog line during the summer, however, it is colder during the winter. It has nice country homes, small ranchettes and a smattering of farming is still done there. The cool coastal weather has attracted many generations from the scorching interior from the San Joaquin Valley to Rio Del Mar and Seacliff areas.

Read some of the interesting history of  Aptos

In 1833 the government of Mexico granted Aptos Rancho to Rafael Castro, whose ranch would eventually total almost 6,686 acres. Initially, Castro raised cattle for their hides, but after California became a state in 1850, leased his land to the incoming population. A wharf and lumber mill were built and a train line was established to take the bounty of the forest to growing markets. Later after the lumber boom faded, apples and agriculture flourished. The original town of Aptos was located where Aptos Village Square is now.
By 1872 Claus Spreckels, the sugar millionaire, began buying the land from the Spanish family of Castro. He built a fine home with guest cottages near the beach in the area of Rio Del Mar. Spreckels Drive was the private entrance road to the summer mansion on the hill overlooking the ocean and he also had a ranch with a racetrack for his horses. He even had Polo Grounds, which is now a County Park, just across the freeway from Deer Park. A large area was fenced and stocked with deer and other animals for hunting, and that area became known as "The Deer Park." The shopping center of that name still exists with a nice upscale grocery store, Deluxe Foods, owned by the Monte Family. The Monte Family is a big supporter of locals schools and activities. In the same shopping center is a nice restaurant named Bittersweet Café, which took over the famous Deer Park Tavern. The many big game heads on the walls overlooking the patrons are now gone, but the fine dining still remains. The shopping center also houses a wide range of other businesses and more informal dining venues.
Spreckels also helped finance the Santa Cruz Railroad which opened in 1876 to bring lumber from the hills to the markets for a growing state. The thriving redwood and oak industry provided the means for many a business and family. The original steam engine "Jupiter" is now in the Smithsonian history museum. With the coming of the railroad, the town moved to the other side of Aptos Creek and is now called Aptos Village.Spreckels' brother-in-law, Claus Mangels, built himself a mansion located within Nisene Marks Park. It is now a first-class Bed and Breakfast. Rafael Castro's son-in-law, Joseph Arano, Aptos' first postmaster, built the Arrow Hotel. Later it was renamed the Bayview Hotel, also now a Bed & Breakfast. This is the majestic Hotel Bayview in Aptos Village. Ristorante Barolo operates below this B&B landmark today. The Bayview Hotel has housed the likes of Lillian Russell and others. The three-story, 11,000 square foot hotel and restaurant looks much the same as it always did.The Victorian architecture stands out for its beauty and enormity. Café Barolo, located in the hotel, is an Italian restaurant. Located across the street is one of my local favorite places, Café Sparrow. Down the street is a local English Pub, Britannia Arms, good for a pint and a game of pool or darts, and an English pub meal. Britannia Arms Pub is in Aptos Village. The quaint Aptos village has developed a general plan to unify the village area to a more vibrant center. Located within easy walking are clothing, antique and furniture shops. Located off Trout Gulch Road, Village Fair Antiques is now located in the old apple packing plant and is a large antique emporium where you can browse for hours.
