Capitola Jewel Box Homes
The original area homes are small 2 bedroom 1 bath 850 square foot boxy single level cottages. I am guessing the "Jewel Box" was so named for the streets names, certainly not for these boxy often utilitarian homes that sprang up. The "Jewel Box" streets have names such as Opal, Garnet, Diamond, Ruby,Crystal, and Topaz.
While this is not all, it will give you an idea. In the 70's there was a development of condominiums called "Capitola Shores". They were built by a builder named, I believe, McKuen. They are all about the same size as the small homes and are either a townhouse style or condominium style. Closer to the village, the homes are larger and newer. This area is a great place for a senior to live as the homes are mostly one level, and shopping is nearby, as is the community center that the seniors use often.
This neighborhood has the local community center and a great park,Jade Street Park. Located adjacent to the soccer field are the community gardens. You need to sign up for them, but it is nice to have. Jade Street Park is a well used community park that has softball and soccer as well as approximately 6 tennis courts. There is also a kid's play area. This great park also houses the community gardens near the soccer field. The Jewel Box is a real treasure for local Capitola citizens.
