La Selva Beach Homes and community
This small coastal beach community used to be in a major fog
belt years ago, but times have changed, a bit. While I won't get up on
a
soap box about global warming, the benefits of less fog has made this
town a more desirable place to live in the last decade. So the town
is still a sleepy throw back place of the 50's, just not as foggy, the
prices are definitely 21st century. The town has a main boulevard with
tall trees separated by an island of grass and flowers. There is a small grocery store , the library,
a fire
department
and Grange Hall, church
and a few other establishments. Quaint and quiet are apt descriptions
of the town and some of the houses, even a pretty little B&B,
the Flora Vista Inn. If you decide to
live
here, join the La Selva Beach Improvement Association and you'll
receive a key to the "private beach." LSBIA publishes a
monthly newsletter called the Beachcomber that keeps all the
residents up to date on local La Selva events such as the Forth of July
Parade, Halloween, Christmas and a few other community events.
The La Selva Beach area per our MLS is a good sized area and stretches
down to Pajaro Dunes, in Watsonville . The main road to these areas is
predominantly San Andreas Road. The area still has a variety of
agricultural endeavors, including flower
farming, small organic farms as well as
strawberries and other crops. There is a KOA
campground you would not expect off this beaten path as well. The area
has homes that range from small beach cottages to mansions with
stunning ocean views, to condos that are on the sand to homes with
views of rolling acreage on out to the sea.
Probably one of the early adopters to this area was the California
National Guard, which used the area as an artillery training
center, under the name Camp McQuaide. The post of almost
400
acres was decommissioned after the war and considered surplus. The
State of California government tried to sell the property to Santa Cruz
County for a junior college site, and later to the State division of
Parks
to be the site of a state park. No one was buying at even the nominal
price of a dollar. In 1948 the Seventh-day Adventist Church acquired
the property at no cost. The War Assets Administration wanted to get
rid
of the property and it was taken over to become Monterey Bay Academy.
Real estate this prime would have been snapped up by any of us; if only
we knew.
Monterey
Bay Academy is a Seventh-day
Adventist, a co-educational
boarding high school, located on San Andreas Road, in La Selva Beach,
California. Since 1949,
Monterey Bay Academy has built a complete campus and has housing for
the
students. During its time it has had more than 8,000 students, with 95%
of those students going on to colleges. Monterey Bay Academy had, in
their acquisition of the site, their own 3/4 of a mile California beach
and an airport. Monterey
Bay Academy Airport is located
on the Campus of Monterey Bay Academy.
During
his visit to Santa Cruz in 1989, the Dalai
Lama landed at this airport.
Truly a great place to have slower pace of life and enjoy the vast
variety of terrain and views while contemplating life, walking on the
sand.
