In the
1950's, St. Patrick's Catholic Church established the St. Patrick's
High School Building Fund to build a Catholic high school in Santa Cruz
County. Mora High School, named after Bishop Mora was built in the late
1950's. The school operated as a Catholic high school until the late
1970's. During that time, the school was closed due to lack of
enrollment and sold to the Pájaro Valley Unified School District.
In the 1980's Pájaro Valley Unified School District developed a voluntary desegregation plan. The cornerstone of the plan was the implementation of a magnet school program. The people in the area, which was being served by Radcliff Elementary School, agreed to give up their neighborhood school in favor of the new magnet school that would provide their children with busing and special projects. A contest was held to name the new magnet school. A teacher in the District, Zonwiese Stein, won the contest with her submission, Alianza, which means, alliance. Thus, the two neighborhoods formed an alliance, and Alianza Elementary School was created. Today, Alianza Charter School serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade with a two-way immersion program. |
