Creating Peace in your life.

Creating peace in your life can come in many forms. One of the ways to give yourself some peace is to reduce the clutter in your mail box and the ringing in your ears.

To stem the flow of junk mail and tele-marketer calls, there are a couple of options. The most comprehensive list is found at http://www.worldprivacyforum.org/toptenoptout.html.  This site has explanations of most all of the lists you want to get off.

The most commonly used list by tele-marketers to check against is the governments Do Not Call Registry. You can either go online to National Do Not Call Registry  and register there or call 1-888-382-1222. The organizations that you do business with all seem to have some little check box we forget to read carefully, and uncheck. Those companies and their affiliates can call you for up to 18 months. If they call, kindly ask to be removed from their list. Get from the representative the # and address to send your request in case they fail to do so. Your name will stay on the list for 5 years. I have had a great reduction since I did this. If you wish to file a complaint, get your information correct from the caller, read the form first so you know what is needed. It is especially helpful if you have a senior or parent who falls prey to telemarketers.

Direct Marketing Association ( DMA) is a large trade organization of businesses that market to consumers. Not all businesses are members. Members market to consumers via telephone, mail, internet, radio and TV. When you do business with a company, and it is rarely the little guys, tell them you don’t want to your name sold. I unfortunately didn’t see the check box and had it happen to me. I got about 10 different companies sending me catalogs, companies who I have never done business with, and in many cases never heard of. Keep the catalog so you can give them the reference numbers printed on the back. They will take you off the list, but because of the time lines for production, you will likely get 1-2 more after you cancel. When you go online you will be charged a nominal fee, so have a credit card available. Once again protect your seniors as they are frequently the target fraud. I know someone who always thinks he is winning the lottery in Spain, Canada, and Ireland, and has lost money. Please do this for them and your peace of mind.

Credit Card solicitations. These are some of the most heinous companies right now in my opinion. They can jack up you rates even though you are in good standing with them, in cases way over 20 or 30% because you are having a problem with another card. In the old days loan sharks charged that rate and you know their reputation. Contact your congressman or senator regarding reform in this area. You can get some good information at the Federal Trade Commission ( FTC) on what your rights are. To opt out of these, follow this link.
