Monterey Real Estate

Monterey real estate owners enjoy a sea-side city of fishing boats and old adobes, and a town packed with history that offers an almost endless variety of outdoor activities. But it is the beautiful Monterey Bay that seems to permeate every experience in the town.

The bay is part of the 5,322-square-mile Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary—almost one and a half times as large as Yellowstone National Park. Sea otters, sea lions and whales can be spotted in the cool, blue waters. There are many Monterey homes for sale with stunning ocean views. Monterey Homes

Like writer Robert Luis Stevenson, who lived in Monterey, real estate owners can also sense a "haunting presence of the ocean” with the cry of gulls or the tang of salt in the air. Monterey home owners can take a morning stroll along the beautiful beach, or along the Monterey Peninsula Recreation Trail. One of the prettiest stretches runs from the justifiably famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, about a mile out to Lovers Point, which is a small grassy peninsula. Listen to the water crash on the rocky coast as the sun sets.

In Monterey, it is easy to sail or kayak among the sea lions. A temperate climate means that if you buy a Monterey home you will be able to pursue outdoor activities year round. If you are looking for Monterey real estate, you can find everything from spectacular ocean view villas to smart condominiums. Monterey's 30,000 homeowners enjoy all the advantages of a city, but with the charm of a seaside village.

Every fourth grader in Monterey's quality school system knows that Monterey was once the capital of California. It is jam-packed with history, much of it on view in the city's old adobe buildings. Founded in 1770, Monterey is a former seat of government under Spanish, Mexican and American rule. Visit the Monterey State Historic Park for a glimpse of California's political past. It was at the nearby Colton Hall—now part of the Civic Center—that in 1849 the state's first constitution was written in English and Spanish.

Monterey also has a storied past as a trading and whaling center. A good place to explore the city's days as a seafaring capital is the Monterey Maritime and History Museum. In addition, Monterey also has a rich literary past. You can see the desk in his Monterey home where Robert Louis Stevenson reputedly jotted down ideas for "Treasure Island." The fish canneries that inspired John Steinbeck's “Cannery Row” have evolved into gift shops and restaurants, but you can still watch each morning as the fishermen unload their catches at Fisherman's Wharf. "Life on Cannery Row was curious and dear and outrageous," Steinbeck wrote.

Monterey also has a rich cultural life. The most important event takes place each September, when the city plays host to a jubilant jazz festival that features many big-name performers. If you don't already own a Monterey home, make sure to book a room in one of the beautiful Monterey inns or hotels.
