One of the most important environmentally friendly activities to get the kids involved in is household recycling. To begin this project, get some containers to put the various household recyclables in. Have a separate container for each recyclable class such as glass, plastic, paper, etc. Let the kids make the signs for the different containers.
During the week, teach the children which items are suitable for recycling in Monterey homes and let them be responsible for placing the various items in the proper containers. Get the kids involved in washing out plastic containers for recycling or collecting newspapers, stock paper and scrap paper from around the house.
If the Monterey homes in your community have curbside recycling, let the children assist in placing the recyclables at the curb on pick-up day. If you have to travel to a recycling center, make it a family outing to show that doing environmentally friendly activities can be fun as well as beneficial for the planet.
Another environmentally friendly job the kids can help with is changing out the light bulbs around the house from the old incandescent bulbs to compact florescent bulbs.
As a family, you can also move outside of your own home and into the community to engage in environmentally friendly activities. Many communities have days set aside for community beautification when everyone in a neighborhood picks up trash and tries to make things more pleasant in appearance for the surrounding Monterey homes. Also, many clubs and churches sponsor monthly roadside clean up projects to help make the community look nice.
Something else environmentally friendly the whole family can participate in is establishing an organic garden at home or participating in a community garden project. The kids can learn which type of fertilizer and growing techniques are environmentally friendly and those that are harmful to the environment. Organic gardening can also teach environmental methods of weed control and composting.
These are just a few of the environmentally friendly activities the whole family can be involved in. The entire family will find that going green is good for planet and for building strong family relationships as well.
