Santa Cruz County Metro to help you reduce carbon footprint

Santa Cruz, CA is a healthy place to live and work. As more people take into account their transportation costs, the better the bus looks. Urban living may be getting more accepted if you can take the bus or are lucky enough to walk or bike to work, you can reduce your carbon footprint. Most folks though, drive alone. While real estate in Santa Cruz, Ca is not highly sought after on busy streets or arteries, with the high cost of fuel, consumers may want to rethink the idea. In part there has to be a better product to make people consider a change. Our nation has historically had a non existent energy policy and a poor public transit system, excepting only some big cities. Stinky bus’ are going to be a thing of the past here in Santa Cruz.

At a recent seniors commission meeting, I heard a number of people from the Santa Cruz Metro Transit district that they are getting better attendance on their shuttles over the hill. These shuttles serve many passengers and link up in San Jose at the bus and rail terminal in San Jose. You can catch the light rail, Amtrak and travel to the city, watch a Giants ball game or get to stops in Silicon Valley.

So from Santa Cruz, one can go to a Giants game, go to work in Santa Clara and not have to use a car. How cool is that? While real estate is not generally as valuable on busy streets, being a few blocks from an artery can help your waistline and your wallet.

SCMT has been committed to going green and years ago started converting their fleet of diesels (diesel used to be the cheapest form of fuel, but now it is over $5 a gallon) to CNG or compressed natural gas.

For more on how to get around in a green fashion, call the Metro at 831-425-8600 and find out which bus routes or which services will get you to where you need to go.

When you ride the bus to San Jose you can stay connected to the Internet with their Wi-Fi Internet connection free of charge. So how cool is that, get to work without driving, work while they drive or get your personal stuff like looking for a house in Santa Cruz and have all that out of the way by the time you are there. You will arrive more relaxed, not have to worry about gas and are saving the environment at the same time. Mass transit is finally getting more use and this is a great program for many. Go to www.scmtd.com and learn more about how you can help minimize your frustration and save money by riding the bus.
