The Santa Cruz Beach Hill neighborhood was originally the domain of the upper crust of Santa Cruz society back in the early days of Santa Cruz's inception in the 1850's. At one point Santa Cruz had 6 wharves out front of it, so there was a lot of commerce. Today the Beach Hill neighborhood is a mix of some grand old Victorian homes, as well a condominiums. Many of these homes in Santa Cruz on Beach Hill have ocean views, Santa Cruz wharf views or views of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Beach Hill is a cool area across from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in the upper area. The lower area is called beach flats and houses many of the workers that support the major tourist attraction. This search doesn't cover that area though as the housing is mostly rentals owned by the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
The Beach Hill neighborhood was home to some of the rich bankers, businessmen and sea captains of the 1860s'- on. There are a number of a nice Victorian homes here, their styles and large size are best represented here more so than in any other part of the town. While most are private, some are rented via the major vacation sites, as well as a few hotels, the area is within 10 minutes of the Pacific Garden Mall, Santa Cruz's main downtown shopping area. This mall has an eclectic bunch of shops, art galleries, clothing, food and other things of interest. The 9 Plex cinema (click here for times) has great seats and a wide array of movies.

The historic Victorian cottages on Beach Hill known as the Carmelita Cottages,are part of the hostel system.These buildings are part of a Santa Cruz City park and were completely restored through the fundraising efforts of the volunteers of the Santa Cruz Hostel.
