What should I look for in a real estate agent?

A real estate agent is your partner in buying or selling a home. Therefore, it is worth the effort to investigate potential agents and choose the one that best meets your needs. Things to look for include:

Experience: Real estate is a commission-based career, so those who are good at what they do are more likely to remain in the field.

Volume: Although a high volume of clients is a good sign, too many clients can spread a real estate agent too thin. You need to know that your agent will be there for you, or at least has a licensed assistant or teammate who can answer your questions when needed.

Ratio of buyers to sellers: Although agents tend to specialize in one or the other, it is extremely helpful to choose an agent with experience on both sides of the buying process.

Territory: Try to find a middle ground between “neighborhood experts” who may try to shoehorn you into a small territory that isn’t right for you and travelers who cover the whole state. You want your agent to have an in-depth knowledge of the area you are considering as well as other areas that might be an even better fit.

Specialized knowledge: Your real estate agent should take the time to understand you, your goals, and where you fit into the market. Whether you are a professional house flipper or a first-time homebuyer, your agent should be aware of the questions and concerns that are likely to surface and proactive about meeting your needs.

Communication style: Your ideal agent is comfortable with your preferred communication style, whether that involves evening text messages or morning emails. Also discuss such details as frequency of updates and who else, such as your spouse or adult child, should also be contacted regularly.
