This area has homes mostly from the 50's and 60's, though there were a few smaller developments in the 80's. These newer homes are larger and a have more modern styles. Most of Prospect Heights homes have larger than normal lots for Santa Cruz. The area backs up to De Laveaga Golf Course, which in on a plateau above it. This creates a nice warm climate and plants grow well there. I remember that the fragrant gardenia grows especially well there.
At the west end of Prospect Heights is the entrance to De Laveaga Golf Course as well as the uncommonly found Frisbee Golf course. That is an interesting sport you ought to try sometime. It is a blend of the fun of playing with a Frisbee, accuracy in throwing, and hiking. It is beautiful course, and there are trails accessible from Prospect Heights to enjoy nature. At the east side of Prospect Heights is De Laveaga Elementary which many of the local kids and those from the Banana Belt attend. Harbor High is close by and accessed off of La Fonda Drive.
Many of the early homes were 2 bedroom 1 bath about 1000 square feet and the newer ones mostly 3 bedroom, 2 bath. The newest additions were often 2000-3000 square feet and 3 or 4 bedrooms and located on streets like Burton, Paseo Del Mar and Camino del Sol. Some of these larger home are located at the highest point in the neighborhood have ocean views. Some of the streets you will find here are extensions of the names in the Banana Belt, names like, Pacheco,San Juan, Marnell, Trevethan, and others such as Allerton,Wanda, Heather, Carol, Rooney, Propsect Heights Drive, La Fonda, English, Brookwood, Molly.
