The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor offers a wide array of fun things to do as well as a great diversity of homes to enjoy the waterside living.The yacht harbor area is the place to be if you want to be a beach bum, a fisherman or a sailor and is sort of its own little community there. The most desirable Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor real estate immediately rings the harbor and has lovely views of the boats and harbor. Within walking distance the beachgoer or summer renter can get most of anything, even a tomato they forgot to bring for the BBQ on the beach at the bonfire. The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor was created in the early 60's and provides a wealth of sailing, fishing and kayaking or Hobie Catting off of the beach. There are kayaking and outrigger clubs, such as Santa Cruz Rowing too for those who want to get out and have a great day on the water. The beach is easily accessible to those who are not ocean fronting. Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor homes

The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor area was originally settled in the 20's and 30's with lots of small bungalows on small lots. The area to the east of 7th Avenue is called Twin Lakes, as the yacht harbor was created from one of the twins of  Twin Lakes. Not much sense having more real estate than you need to weed, as these out of towners came to get out of the central valley heat. Well things have changed since then with most places being used full time. Most of the lots tend to be smaller on the Lake Drive, Alta Loma and 5th and 6th avenues. They are a bit bigger a bit further back or where lots have been combined. There is a bit less traffic on the other side of 7th avenue, the main artery to get the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, over on 8th-10th avenues.

While the homes may vary from small to medium large, the prices are as you would expect by the water. Today the Yacht Harbor has eclectic mix of cottages, modern beach homes, a sprinkling of condominiums and some fabulous ocean view homes. Cottages start in the $700,000s as of 2016 and fabulous houses can be 3 or 4 million. Quite decent places are in the 1-2 million dollar range . It is nice to have a range of property to suit every budget.

The Yacht Harbor has everything, all a few blocks from the beach, and boating activities. There are some nice eateries, a nice beach, and fishing opportunities for those who want to fish off the jetty or to take a party boat and go fishing for salmon, rock cod or Albacore. Some of the Yacht Harbor restaurants are worth checking out for their fare, or location. The Crow's Nest has a location that is second to none and has good food. The also have very nice bar upstairs and have live music in the evening .They also do a Thursday evening BBQ on the beach in the summer with music that is pretty cool too.In the same strip as the Crows Nest is a take out style place called Cafe El Palomar, a Mexican Restaurant,a coffee shop, and tourist shops as well. There are also several fishing tackle shops as well.

At the head of the harbor is one of my favorite places for really good food, and that is Johnny's Harborside. The location is at the bridge and where the fisherman off load their catch. It doesn't get much fresher than that! Cool to watch the fishermen doing their thing as well as you leisurely have lunch or dinner. On the other side of the harbor is a good place, a throwback type of place really, called Aldo's. They do breakfast and lunch. You can take a Water Taxi over there or walk over the bridge and down the other side, or park in the lot on the side of the harbor. Bring your quarters! They have good breakfasts and do the fish and chips and a variety of other expected things for being right on the harbor.

You can spend a fun day on the bay with something like the O'Neil Odyssey or aboard the lovely Chardonnay, a 70' sail boat sailing around or whale watching. If you hanker to go fishing, there are a couple of choices for the party boat experience on either a larger boat, or smaller 6 pack sizes.

 The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor has its' own little micro climate, so check the beach cam if you are coming from out of the area. The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. There are a variety of things to do and see in the Bay, but keep in mind wild life is just that. If you see a sick seal, stay away, but get help. If you do other things because it is foggy at the beach, check out "Things to do on a gray day" on my site. There is plenty to do, you just need to know where to look. Usually it is sunny inland when it is foggy at the coast and there is lots to do if you know where to look.

For those of you sailors, the Santa Cruz Yacht Club is located on the Santa Cruz side of the harbor on 4th avenue. You can access it from the lower lot off of Atlantic .

The Santa Cruz Port District was formed in 1950 by election of the people for the purpose of developing harbor facilities in the Santa Cruz area. Studies on the Harbor undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were completed in 1958 and presented to Congress. As a result, a joint project was established for the development of Santa Cruz Harbor with the participation of the Army Corps of Engineers, the agency which is currently [1980] designated the California Department of Boating and Waterways (BAW), and the Santa Cruz Port District. The Lower Harbor was completed in 1964 with breakwaters provided by the Corps of Engineers. Harbor facilities were developed by the Port District with financing proved by BAW through a twenty-year loan. Approximately 360 berths were created, plus a launching ramp. Because of great demand for berthing in the 1960's, the Port District initiated action to expand the Harbor beyond the Murray Street bridge into Arana Gulch and upper Woods Lagoon. The District, with cooperation from BAW, arranged to finance the project with a state loan and a grant from the Department of Parks and Recreation. The facility was completed in 1973 and provided approximately 560 additional berths.
